Project Title: Sasuke Inari Shrine | Bilingual Production & Localization System

The Challenge

To design and engineer a "single-source" production workflow for a high-end heritage guide. The project required maintaining 100% layout parity between English and Japanese versions while managing the unique technical constraints of CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) typography.

Technical Process & Operations

  • Single-Source Architecture: Built using a layered InDesign framework to allow for rapid language toggling. This "Master File" approach ensures that any global design changes (imagery, branding, or margins) update across all localized versions simultaneously.

  • Typography Systems: Implemented a Parent/Child Paragraph Style hierarchy. This allowed for universal alignment settings while specifically tuning the Japanese version for CJK-specific requirements, including Kinjis (line-breaking rules) and Mojikumi (punctuation spacing).

  • Localization Engineering: Adjusted vertical leading and optical margin alignment to account for the increased complexity and "ink density" of Kanji characters compared to Latin script.

  • Bilingual Asset Management: Engineered custom vector maps and iconography to be fully bilingual, eliminating the need for separate image links per language and reducing final package size.

Print Production Specifications

  • Color Profile: High-fidelity CMYK + Pantone 172 C (Vermillion Spot Color) for brand-critical accuracy on the Torii gate visuals.

  • Finishing: Tri-fold mechanical with custom Fold Compensation (interior panels adjusted by 2mm) to prevent buckling.

  • Pre-press: Hand-off package includes a technical slug, $0.125"$ bleeds, and a non-printing dieline layer for vendor precision.

  • Substrate: Specified for 100lb Matte Cover, FSC-Certified.

The Result

A press-ready, scalable localization system that reduces production turn-around time for additional languages by 60% and ensures 100% brand consistency across international markets.
